OUR HISTORY

A welcoming tradition of worship and spiritual growth

For a church that embraces the new, the cutting edge, First Parish in Malden Universalist has a rich and storied past. In fact, First Parish stands as the oldest faith-based community in the City of Malden, Mass. First Parish in Malden began holding services in 1648, officially incorporating with the City of Malden in 1649. Originally meeting on Main Street, First Parish occupied three other locations before moving to our present location at 2 Elm Street. The current church, completed in 1909, was built during the ministry of the Rev. Dr. Richard Eddy Sykes (1904-1919), who later became President of St. Lawrence University following his service at First Parish.

In 1972, First Parish in Malden merged with the First Universalist Society of Everett (founded July 8, 1869) to become the First Parish in Malden, Universalist we know today.
First Parish celebrated its 350th year anniversary in 1998, one year before the City of Malden enjoyed its 350th anniversary in 1999. A gothic brownstone building that actually forms the shape of the cross; First Parish is a focal point of the annual City of Malden’s Veterans' Day Parade. The interior of the church is just as riveting with beautiful stained glass windows and a large sanctuary complete with a pipe organ.

An active member of the Unitarian Universalist Association, First Parish explores relevant issues of the day and the great religions of the world.
