That may sound cliché, but it's true. The First Parish in Malden, Universalist consists of people from all walks of life, all creeds and colors. Most live in the greater Malden/Everett area, though some travel from Boston and others from surrounding towns. Some are lifelong members of the Unitarian Universalist Church, while many more came from other faiths—Catholicism and Judaism, for example—or from no religious background at all. All share the common desire to worship and grow spiritually in a liberal religious community.
Unlike other churches, the First Parish in Malden, Universalist is wholly owned and operated by the congregation. Our Parish board and elected officers, made up of congregation members, govern First Parish, with support and assistance from the Unitarian Universalist Association in Boston. So the congregation genuinely determines the direction of the church and its practices.
To that end, our congregation members remain committed to making First Parish in Malden Universalist a place of spiritual and individual growth as well as welcoming sanctuary for:
Families of all kinds-single-parents, same-sex parents, two-parent homes
Individuals - single, divorced, gay and lesbian, political or apolitical
People coming from other types of worship-Catholicism, Judaism, mainline Protestant-even agnostics and practitioners of earth-based religions who don't profess belief in a traditional God
Humanists or individuals who believe in God, but not Jesus as the son of God and savior
People who have not attended church in years; not really wanting to go back to the churches they grew up in but wanting to be part of a religious community again.
Anybody seeking a place of worship that encourages keeping an open mind, and believing that personal experience, conscience, and reason should be the final authorities in religion.
